So, how’d you like that visit from the Polar Vortex last week? Unfortunately for all of us here in Southern Maine, that may not be the last time we experience the bitter cold this season.
Keeping an eye on how much heating oil or propane you have is even more essential in these frigid winter temperatures if you’re a pay-as-you-go (Will-Call) customer for your fuel delivery. Why’s that? Mainly because you’re responsible for monitoring your tank gauge levels and contacting us to request a delivery when you get low.
We strongly urge our customers to NOT let your tank fall below 30% full before you request a delivery. That holds especially true in very cold weather or if there’s a winter storm in the upcoming forecast.
Just in-case you’re not familiar, here’s a reminder on how to check your fuel gauge:
If you use heating oil, look for the clear plastic tube on the top of the tank. There are markings on the outside of the tube that looks like numbers you’d find on a car’s fuel gauge: F, ¾, ½, ¼, etc. Inside the tank is a red marker or a float that indicates how much oil is in the tank. If the marker or float is at the bottom of the gauge or isn’t visible, the tank is empty or almost empty. If that’s the case for you, call us IMMEDIATELY for an emergency delivery.
For a propane tank, look for the round dial on it that looks like a speedometer. The numbers on the dial indicate the percentage of how full your propane tank is. If the needle is on 50, your propane tank is 50% full.
If you forget to check your tank gauge, or let it get low, you could face a runout. It’s a costly mistake.
First, you have to worry about your home being cold.
Then there’s the possibility of your pipes possibly freezing and bursting.
Finally, you have to have an emergency fuel delivery—which we can provide to our customers 24/7—but comes at an added expense.
Running out of propane is equally inconvenient. If you run out of gas, your pilot lights will go out—a very dangerous situation if not handled properly. And by federal code, all out-of-gas calls require a visit from a qualified technician to perform a leak test in your home—paid for by you.
If you ever do have a no-heat emergency, DO NOT email us, or contact us online. Call us right away at 207-352-7800 or 888-773-8357.
